NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2016

The 2016 National NOW Conference will be held June 24 – 26 at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. We hope you will be able to join us as we celebrate NOW’s 50th Anniversary!

I’m writing to invite you to submit a workshop proposal for the conference. The deadline is April 1, 2016, so please make it a priority to organize your panels and submit online proposals by then. We hope to finalize the list of workshops by the first week of May so that panelists can make their travel plans in plenty of time.

The theme for this year’s conference is Carrying the Torch Together, to signify our pride in all we have accomplished since NOW’s founding in 1966 and our dedication to another 50 years (and more!) of intersectional grassroots organizing for equality.

This year, by popular demand, about half of our workshops will be skills-building sessions, from how to build a statewide coalition to promote NOW’s issues, to screening candidates for political endorsements, to recruiting new members to your chapter and state, to learning how to use the newest social media tools.

Issue-based workshops will address NOW’s six core issues: reproductive rights and justice, economic justice for all women, ending racism, winning full civil and human rights for LGBQTIA people, ending violence against women, and including women’s equality in the U.S. Constitution. We are especially interested in workshops addressing the sex-abuse-to-prison pipeline; overturning the Hyde Amendment and guaranteeing full coverage for abortion care through Medicaid as well as private insurance; and using the ERA to win equal rights for women in all communities, including women of color, immigrant women, LGBTQIA people, and women with disabilities.

Use this form to submit your proposal. Please remember that we look for panels that offer a diversity of voices, including diversity of race/ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and ability. Other things to remember:

  • Travel: NOW is not able to pay travel or room and meal expenses for workshop presenters. Workshop presenters attending the conference for just their presentation may pay the one-day $65 registration rate for members ($75 for non-members) or utilize the sliding scale.
  • Handouts: Information tables will be located in the workshop rooms to display your information. Please bring enough materials to distribute to a minimum of 50 participants.
  • Technology: Regretfully, hotel AV costs have become prohibitively expensive. As a result, most of the workshop rooms will NOT have projectors or screen setups, or the capacity to play a video with sound. However, if your workshop truly won’t work without AV, we will try to work with you and the hotel, with some sharing of costs, to get the AV you require. most of the workshop rooms will NOT have projectors or screen setups. If you feel you absolutely must have AV or other technology, we can put you in touch with hotel personnel who will work directly with you, at your expense.

The deadline to submit a workshop proposal is April 1, 2016! We look forward to reviewing your submission.

See you at the conference, June 24 – 26!
