She Should Run

IN A NUTSHELL: “Of the 1,963 people who have served in the Senate, just 46 have been women, or about 2 percent.”

WHY IT MATTERS: “Senator Barbara Mikulski, a Democrat from Maryland who announced on Monday that she would not run for re-election, has served longer than any other female senator.”

IN A NUTSHELL: “Women already face many inequities in the American workplace. They receive less pay, and they take a financial hit when they have a baby, while men get a boost. And now, it appears, women are less likely to get paid time off, even though they typically need it more often.”

WHY IT MATTERS: “You can draw that conclusion, at least, from a new report by the Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management that found great disparities in the type of workers who receive paid time off — either vacation time or sick days or more general paid leave. Nearly all-full time workers do. But less than a third of part-time workers do.”

IN A NUTSHELL: “Each year, people all over the world gather together to celebrate International Women’s Day.

We’ve trawled through all the global events — most of which fall at the beginning of March — to bring you the coolest conferences, gigs, walks and other events that you shouldn’t miss.”

WHY IT MATTERS: “The list is jam-packed with inspiring women from all walks of life — among them scientists, comics, musicians, coders, activists and actors.

Whatever you’re into, there’s probably something for you here.”
